Marcellus is a prime example of the ends justifying the means.

Mai has an incredibly biased view of Marcellus because she recalls being kidnapped to his clinic and her time spent with him in New Orleans as a torturous experience that lasted far too long.
To be fair to the good doctor, he has a love for what he does. He considers himself a surgeon. Mai considers him a sadist and at best a quack.
He and his consort, Nurse Spencer have done business at Liest Mental Health Facility in New Orleans in recent past. The main floor of this clinic was a psych ward. In the basement, he did his surgical work. Only now is it coming to light what the work was for.
Marcellus is a doctor that performs surgeries, transplants, and dabbles in blood chemistry and currently seems to be working on a particular flavor of blood either as part of the Blood Disease or as an innoculation to it. Probably both <-- Mai s opinion.
He's already demonstrated incredible surgical skills as well as Domination skills.
