SKYLA PRELUDE 5

ST ::It had been a hard days work; your father always had various tasks that needed to be done, and lately you'd taken over more and more of them. Making nails wasn't very exciting, but you'd been working on a new plow for most of the day -- it'd been more challenging, but also more exhausting.::

ST ::So, after the day was over, you made your way down the street a bit and toward the small Tavern. Detrick ran a fine establishment, and the place was always full of people this time of day...::

Melina`Orone smiles down at Skyla, giving her a tall mug of ale (on credit, of course).

Skyla "Thanks, Mel." she takes the mug, and leans back in her chair with a sigh. "My arms are killing me." she rubs a bulging bicep.

Melina`Orone ::The tavern is just as crowded tonight as it usually is. The cobbler and his son are off at one of the tables near the front, a few Laals are up at the bar with one of the Councilors, the Hetman and some farmers are on one corner nursing a few mugs of ale.::

Melina`Orone "How is yer father doing, then? I heard he was feeling ill."

Skyla frowns a little, and takes a long drink. "He'll get better soon, I think. I've been helping out more, so he can rest." she checks out the cobbler's son.

Melina`Orone ::There don't seem to be any /special/ guests though. No merchants, or traders. Just the local regulars. That was more than fine with you; having a few outsiders could be fun, and the news and stories were almost fun, but the place had a habit of... well, nobody around here was entirely comfortable around outsiders.::

Melina`Orone just nods softly, and gives you a supporting pat on the shoulder.

Melina`Orone ::Marin, the Cobbler's son, glances back at you a few times as well. He smiles. You and him had been doing this a few weeks now.::

Skyla still feels like an outsider sometimes, but that's mostly the ones she doesn't like anyway. "Thanks... hey uh.. do you know if Marin is uh.. with anyone?"

Melina`Orone glances at you, and gives you a little grin.

Melina`Orone "Noooo." *giggle*

Melina`Orone "You should go talk to him,"

Melina`Orone glances over at the Hetman's group...

Skyla blushes and sneaks another look at him. "Oh I couldn't!"

Melina`Orone gives you a smile and a wave, and heads over to deal with them.

Skyla considers going over to talk to him, but instead ducks back behind her drink, and watches him through her hair.

Melina`Orone --

Jhord comes on down from the resting area up top, glancing over at you where your beating a piece of metal into its proper shape.

Jhord "Working on another blade for that Balthasar fellow?"

Jhord smiles.

Skyla smiles and holds it up for him to see, "Flattery gets him everywhere. That and coin."

Jhord "Well he does pay well."

Jhord comes on over behind you, glancing at your work so far.

Jhord "He knows quality when he sees it."

Skyla blushes, though it's hard to see as her skin is already reddened from the heat.

Skyla "I learned from the best!"

Jhord grins a bit.

Jhord "You've gone far past my skills; my hands are too weak, shake too much,"

Jhord "Honestly, you might be better than I was when I was younger..."

Skyla wipes a bit of sweat off her brow, and looks up at him, a little worried. "Don't say things like that. You're the strongest man I know!"

Jhord shakes his head, glancing at some of the mining equipment you'd been making.

Jhord "I'm getting old, Skyla."

Skyla "I know.." she says quietly. "Me too."

Skyla smiles a little. "What do you think?" she gestures to the equipment. "I'm not sure about the balance on the picks... they seem unweildy."

Jhord "Not military picks you're making," he notes, running a hand along ones edge. "They should do their job. Mevitt pays good coin as well," ::that was true as well. The man he'd sent to deal with you...had been surprised to find you running the place. But he'd taken a look at your work and that'd silenced that. Good work, and good money.::

Skyla "I know.. but mining's hard work. I want to help make their job easier if I can.. what do you think about adding a counterweight, here.." she lifts one of the standard picks up, and demonstrates, "To offset the swing, and give it more power?"

Jhord ::Though you don't charge him as much as you might otherwise -- he helps supply the iron you use in your work, and Jhord worked out an arrangement with him long ago.::

Jhord "Give it a try," he notes. "A little innovation is good -- we can afford it,"

Skyla beams, "I will, after I finish this sword." she nods to the metal, heating in the forge-flames. "I don't see why warriors should get all the good stuff."

Jhord laughs.

Jhord ::It was late in the year, already time for Second Harvest. Everyone got called out into the fields; even you spent most of the week with sickle in hand, cutting down grain and helping to pack it. Now though, the hard work was done, and it was a time of celebration.::

Jhord ::The fertility pole was erected, and all the young girls (including you) danced around it. There was lots of meat, sweets, lots of cider. The priestesses of Mun called out, people laughed and danced and spun around together...::

Mevin`Cobb smiles at you, holding your hands, the two of you spinning around.

Skyla laughs and spins, getting dizzy, feeling the blood rush to her head

Mevin`Cobb finally lets you go, and the two of you fall apart, coming to rest near each other -- laughing and smiling and panting a bit. Nearby, Melina and her current boy do much the same thing...::

Mevin`Cobb ::Your father, off to one corner, is laughing and drinking with one of the older widows.::

Skyla grins up at the stars, feeling that all is right with the world today. She giggles, and turns to look at Mevin. "I love the Harvest Festivals, don't you?" she asks breathlessly.

Mevin`Cobb "Oh yes! Do you think Mun will come visit us??"

Mevin`Cobb smiles at you, still catching his breath.

Mevin`Cobb ::As of this year, you've only seen the Grain Goddess...6 times.::

Skyla smiles back, "I hope so. It's amazing when she comes!"

Mevin`Cobb ::Some traders, who had been drinking cider for a long while, pass on by -- one of them glancing at your direction.::

Trader glances at your shoulder a bit...

Skyla studiously ignores him.

Trader just stares for a bit, then shrugs and wonders off, finding a pretty young village girl to flirt with.

Skyla lets out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. A cloud crosses her face. "Does it.. bother you?" she asks, tentatively

Trader looks confused?

Mevin looks confused?

Mevin "What??"

Mevin hadn't noticed...

Skyla sighs... "How I came here. To Nulam."

Mevin "I... I think you're a year older than me."

Mevin "But I don't remember..."

Mevin ponders.

Skyla "Yeah... I came here when I was six." she's not sure she wants to talk about this anymore...

Mevin ::Most of the villagers, your self-consciousness aside, don't even think of you as a slave.::

Madaska "Calm down girl, and tell me what happened..."

Madaska talks, as she walks (slowly; she's even older than Jhord) with you toward the Blacksmith.

Skyla stares up at her, trying to slow her breathing so she can speak.

Skyla "He.. He said his arm hurt, but he's been saying he's weak for a while... and then he couldn't breathe, he said it hurt, here." she taps her chest, and feels her own heart racing, "Then he fell! He fell down, and he's not moving!"

Madaska just nods...

Madaska "Alright; take me to him, and let us hurry."

Madaska brought her medicine bag with her, and apparently is happy with the selection there.

Skyla would run if she could help Madaska along any faster!

Madaska hurries as best she can, but even so, it takes her farrrr too long to get there by your reckoning.

Madaska arrives, however, eventually -- where Jhord is currently still on the floor, his eyes somewhat cloudy, a bit disoriented. He calls out to you...

Madaska goes closer to him, leaning gown, working her way down to her knees...placing the Medicine Bag next to her.

Skyla abandons Madaska when she reaches the doorway, and runs forward to her father, "It's okay, Father, Madaska's here... don't worry, we'll help you." she looks up pleadingly at Madaska

Madaska ignores you, glancing down, feeling his forehead lightly and taking his pulse...

Madaska frowns a bit.

Madaska "Hmmm; you will be okay, relax,"

Skyla watches her every move.. next time she might be able to help sooner...

Madaska takes a small hard substance from her bag, breaks it up, and places it on his tongue. It dissolves easily.

Skyla "What's that?"

Madaska "Ssssh,"

Madaska takes out a bit of salt, and sprinkles it lightly over him, chanting just a bit.

Madaska invokes the Grain Goddess, Gaia, and a few gods that your not aware of.

Madaska is very intent on her work...

Madaska then takes a large iron and jade pendant, and carefully laces it around his neck...

Skyla watches, hovering, wanting to help

Madaska ensures that the pendant itself is touching Jhords skin.

Skyla settles for holding Jhord's hand.

Madaska watches over him for a bit; he seems to be calming down, not in as much pain...

Madaska nods softly.

Madaska takes out a small piece of cloth, and a few herbs...

Madaska "Ensure that he takes one of these every day,"

Skyla "What's in it?"

Madaska "Herbs of healing. Ginsing, rosemary, adder's tongue."

Madaska "It will help him to recover."

Madaska "He must rest; do whatever you can to keep him calm as well."

Madaska "And ensure that he wears the pendant!"

Skyla "I will, I promise!

Madaska nods softly... smiles, stroking his cheek a bit, shaking her head.

Madaska "We will let him rest here for a while, but after an hour or so, help him back upstairs."

Madaska stands over, and glances around, looking for a chair...

Madaska is going to sit here with you and watch over him.

Skyla "Okay... Thank you... Thank you so much.. I don't know what I would do without you!"

Skyla lifts her father's head and places it in her lap, smoothing his hair gently. "See? Madaska says you'll be okay, Dad..."
