Presence Charms

Soul-Bearing Mien

Cost: 2m; Mins: Presence 2, Essence 1; Type: Simple (Speed 3 in long ticks)
Keywords: Illusion, Mirror(Void Unveiling Mien; follows), Social
  Duration: One scene
  Prerequisite Charms: None

The inner strength of the Lawgivers burns like the sun. This Charm allows the Solar to substitute any of his Virtues or his Essence rating for his Appearance rating for the rest of the scene. While under the effects of this charm, anyone the Solar interacts with is assured of the character's Great Virtue (or his Terrible Power), a condition that is treated as a concession granted to the character in Social Combat. This free concession is an Illusion effect that may be resisted for 2 willpower, and it will not affect anyone with an Essence rating higher than the Solar's. You may change which Virtue you invoke, or invoke the power of your Exaltation rather than a Virtue, as a Miscellaneous action.

New Abyssal Charm: Void Unveiling Mien (Prerequisites: None.) The Abyssal Mirror to Soul-Bearing Mien does not allow the Abyssal to invoke Virtues. Instead, the Abyssal may choose to invoke his Essence, or his Whispers rating. The invocation of Essence is as above, while the invocation of Whispers reveals the Abyssal as the representative of dire and powerful forces from beyond the veil.

Commentary: This charm needed a Abyssal Mirror pretty badly, so there you go. I changed its effect back to a compromise between the original and the revised version that I was temporarily using for a while there. I'm very happy with it.

World-Shaking Solar Mien

Cost: -- (1wp); Mins: Presence 4, Essence 3; Type: Permanent
Keywords: Social, Mirror(Killing Words Technique, Abyssals, p. 144).
  Duration: Permanent
  Prerequisite Charms: Majestic Radiant Presence

The Solar's every word is a terrible truth, and turning from his light a feat that doesn't merely challenge the will but breaks it. Whenever a Lawgiver with this charm makes a written or spoken social attack or uses a Charm that imposes unnatural mental influence, he may reflexively pay one Willpower to enhance the effect. By doing so, anyone who would spend Willpower to resist the effect must also sacrifice one permanent dot of Willpower as a crippling effect. Because this is a cost, this damage cannot be prevented by any effect that does not also result in the victim consenting to the attack. After the victim suffers the damage, though, it can be healed normally by using charms or other magic. The Solar can choose rather the effect manifests as crushing ennui or a hideously painful migraine.

The damage also heals naturally over time, as if they were levels of "-2 wound penalty" lethal damage. Continued resistance of the Solar's influence counts as 'normal activity', while relenting to the Solar lets the subject heal as if resting. Anyone reduced to Willpower 0 by this Charm is mindlessly obedient to the Solar's whims until he regains his full Willpower score, and can no longer spend Willpower to resist the Solar's natural or unnatural influence. A mortal so affected also permanently adds 1 willpower to all costs to resist the Solar's unnatural mental influence as an additional crippling effect that does not heal naturally.

Commentary: This charm is, in many ways, stronger than it's Mirror. It inflicts "less damage", but that doesn't doesn't kill the opponent and can eventually entirely rip the capacity to resist the Solar from the subject. This is particularly nasty when combined with "spend 1 willpower per scene/day/week" effects. Of course while it might not literally kill the opponent, it's every bit as much a violation.

Mirror Charms

  • You Can Be More (Mins: Presence 4, Essence 3; Prerequisite Charms: Hypnotic Tongue Technique; Abyssals, p. 143) enhances a Presence-based social attack aimed at building or repairing Intimacies. At Essence 4, it can effect Motivations as well, turning simple dreams into heroic motivations.
  • Mind Yields to Glory (Mins: Presence 5, Essence 3; Prerequisite Charms: Hypnotic Tongue Technique; Abyssals, p. 143) increases the duration of it's Prerequisite Charm to one month. At Essence 4, the Solar can also make the Charm cost 5 willpower to resist as a lump sum, rather than 1w per day.

Solar Charm Cascade Errata (Presence)

  • Hypnotic Tongue Technique (page 203) has the Compulsion Keyword.
  • Majestic Radiant Presence (page 204) changes its Minimum Requirements to Presence 4, Essence 2.
  • Terrifying Apparition of Glory (page 204) can also raise the difficulty of Majestic Radiant Presence's reflexive resistance roll by 2. This requires a charm activation, the normal 2m cost and is an instant effect that affects one Attack or Flurry.
  • Authority-Radiating Stance (page 204) can be purchased a second time at Essence 5. The Solar doubles his effective Presence Rating before comparing it to another character's MDV, and raises the cost to resist the charm to four Willpower. A third purchase, at Essence 7, renders Dodge MDV an inapplicable defense and raises the cost to resist this charm to five Willpower. In addition, the influence lingers with the subject until he spends the willpower to overcome the effect. While he will not necessarily continue to carry out the Solar's commands outside the Exalts presence, he will consider them legitimate.
