As such there were few hopes for wealth or prestige from simple inheritance. Karchen was allotted the ample education of all patricians. He was a quiet but hard working student who took to the field of medicine like few could. It was with this talent that he able to be hired as the personal physician of a Peleps trading house stationed in Thorns.

It was there that he met two women who would change his life, Peleps Minera and her younger sister Peleps Koromi. Minera was a beautiful dragonblooded woman whom Karchen fell in love with eventually earning the nickname "The princess of the storm." The two were lovers for a time but like any relationship between a dynast and a low ranking patrician nothing could come of it. In his heart Karchen perhaps believed it could and that is what made the inevitable breakup all the more devastating to him.

What of Peleps Koromi? It is true that she loved Karchen, perhaps more than Minera did but Karchen was blinded first by love and then by grief so he never saw it.

When Minera received an offer to move back to the blessed isle Karchen turned to drugs. His drug of choice was not any normal pharmaceutical or spirit. Karchen's drug of choice was religion. He resolved to turn his heart into the ice cold purity that the immaculates could attain. Or perhaps he secretly longed to die and be reborn as a dragonblooded so he could be with his beloved Minera again.

With newfound dedication Karchen became skilled in the martial arts of the immaculate dragons. He was tranquil watching the setting sun and with such an affiliation with the western direction he chose the water dragon to emulate. Eventually he grew in skill to the point where is was asked to join a wyld hunt.

His first and only wyld hunt was a mission to take down the Lunar Beast called the hundred topaz leopard. Karchen traveled with several dragonblooded and was reunited with Peleps sisters after several years apart. After months of stalking the beast the Lunar finally ambushed the party on a mountain trail. The anathema's ambush sent both sisters over the edge of a cliff. As both hung from the precipice Karchen instinctively reached for Minera and pulled her to safety. He was too late to save Koromi before she lost her grip and fell to her doom, although her body was never found.

Although the battle took it's toll on Karchen the experience had left him a better person. Where he had once been a machine the loss of Koromi made him realize the fragility of life and Karchen began to practice medicine again, this time for the sake of the common man. That and his renewed connection to Peleps Minera, even if only in correspondence would have easily left Karchen a happy man until the end of his days.

In truth Karchen's happiness lasted for only a year. It was then that Mask of Winters turned his eye toward Thorns and all that lived there would know his fury.
