Back to Martial Arts Charms
This style was perfected in the Late First Age by a powerful Zenith who came to love and admire the power and majesty of the weather, and most especially of the great and thunderous thunderstorms and monsoons that were sometimes unleashed on the First Age landscape (often as war weather, to appease various sky spirits or help smooth out build-ups of dangerous Air Essence, or just on the whim of the Solars). A powerful martial artist, he came to perfect the form of fighting called "Monsoon Style" some long centuries prior to the Usurpation. The martial style focuses on overwhelming power, confusion, slowly gathering force, and awe.
This style can only be performed unarmed, and is not compatible with armor.
Thundering Ringing Blow
Cost: 3 motes Duration: Instant Type: Simple Minimum Martial Arts: 2 Minimum Essence: 1 Prerequisite Charms: None
The Martial Artist strikes with overwhelming force at his opponent, making an unarmed attack that causes the ground to shake and a great voluminous thunder to roar around the unfortunate target who suffered a blow enhanced with this charm. This attack does the character's normal Strength-based damage for his fists, and if the victim takes any damage he must make a Valor roll at difficulty 1. On a failure, that character looses his next action. It is permissible to spend willpower on this virtue roll for an automatic success, thus negating the need to make the roll at all.
Wet Dog Onslaught
Cost: 2 motes Duration: Instant Type: Reflexive Minimum Martial Arts: 2 Minimum Essence: 1 Prerequisite Charms:''' None
The Martial Artist attacks with the intensity and doggedness of the pouring rain, inflicting numerous little wounds that do little actual damage to the target in the short term but render him tired, weak, and unable to effectively attack or defend himself. Any time the character's attack inflicts only minimum damage, he may use this charm for two motes. This reduces the damage rolled to 1 die, and gives the victim a -1 penalty to all actions for the duration of the combat. This penalty is cumulative with multiple attacks, but cannot rise higher than the character's Martial Arts score.
Awesome Thundergod's Mien
Cost: 6 motes, 1 willpower Duration: Five turns Type: Simple Minimum Martial Arts: 3 Minimum Essence: 2 Prerequisite Charms: None
The Martial Artist takes on some of the awesome majesty of the thunderstorm, his eyes seeming to flash with lightning and his voice seeming to boom with the raw intimidating power of the thunder. The character may add his Martial Arts rating to all Presence rolls for the duration of the charm, provided that the roll in question deals with intimidating, the inspiration of awe, shows of power, or some other situation where the character's unconcealable majesty will not be a hindrance. This charm is of little use in seducing a barmaid or winning the trust of an old friend. The use of this charm is obviously supernatural.
Monsoon Form
Cost: 5 motes Duration: One scene Type: Simple Minimum Martial Arts: 4 Minimum Essence: 2 Prerequisite Charms: Thundering Ringing Blow, Wet Dog Onslaught, and Awesome Thundergod's Mien
The character adopts the sheer endurance and overwhelming power of the Monsoon, adopting a high and powerful fighting stance that focuses on powerful downward blows and mighty haymakers. The character seems to tower above any opponents, raining down pain from on high, nearly unreachable in his mastery of this Form, and his attacks seem to rain down with impossible strength, thunderous in their wrath. In this way, the character develops the staying ability to fight for as long as the storm lasts and the power to do a huge amount of damage during that time. The minimum damage of any successful attack against the character is reduced to 1, and he gains his Martial Arts rating as additional bashing damage in hand-to-hand combat (so he does Str+MA+extra successes damage). The character cannot use more than one Form-type Charm at a time. Using a Form-type charm ends the effects of any other Form-type Charm the character was utilizing.
the Path of the Rain
Windblown Horizontal Strike
Cost: 4 motes, 1 willpower Duration: Instant Type: Simple Minimum Martial Arts: 4 Minimum Essence: 2 Prerequisite Charms: Monsoon Form
The wind and the rain can interact together in some ways, allowing the storm to reach you from unexpected angles. Similarly, a Monsoon Stylist with this charm can strike out from surprise, attacking in ways that are difficult for a foe to respond to. The character makes an attack with this charm which cannot be dodged without the use of charms. The subject must make a Perception + Wits roll in order to perceive the change and react quickly enough to utilize his magical defenses, with the difficulty of the roll being the character's Martial Arts rating. If the roll succeeds, the opponent may use reflexive Charms or abilities in order to counter the attack -- though she still cannot avoid it nonmagically. If the roll fails, however, the opponent can only use Charms that specifically state they work on attacks the character is not aware of.
Roaring Downpour Style
Cost: 3 motes Duration: Instant Type: Supplemental Minimum Martial Arts: 5 Minimum Essence: 3 Prerequisite Charms: Monsoon Form
The character's blows roar down around his opponents like a squall of heavy rain, nearly impossible to avoid or turn aside. The opponent grows confused and overwhelmed under the frightening mass of blows, unable to tell from whence the next will come or see any possible way to avoid them, and thus is defeated by the power of the storm. The power of this charm is based on the number of attacks the character has made in this turn: every attack beyond the first adds one to the difficulty of avoiding the current blow. This includes both dodge and parry rolls, but is considered an environmental penalty and can be avoided by effects that negate such. This charm is only useful after the character has made at least one attack and does not give the character any extra attacks: it is usually combined with a split dice pool.
Rushing Waters Assault
Cost: 8 motes, 1 willpower Duration: Instant Type: Extra Action Minimum Martial Arts: 5 Minimum Essence: 3 Prerequisite Charms: Windblown Horizontal Strike, and Roaring Downpour Style
The character concentrates the essence around him in a tight ring, letting a mighty war cry that signals his coming attack -- then lashing out, moving forward with all the fury and unstoppable power of a flash flood. The martial artist moves forward, up to his full movement rate. This movement cannot be stopped by light obstruction or the presence of any number of opponents. Hard obstructions taller than the martial artist constrain his movement, requiring him to go around unless he can immediately break through (make a reflexive roll to destroy a given barrier). Any opponent within (Essence x10) yards of the character's path is subjected to an unarmed attack. Opponents within the character's line of travel must also make a Dexterity + Athletics roll (difficulty of the character's Essence rating), or be knocked casually aside. Even opponents that successfully make the roll cannot restrain the character's passage.
