< Bloody Handed Sons | Buncha Motleys | Boston Chronicle >
The tale of Augustina's motley is nearly as convoluted as that of Augustina herself, complete with all the sex, violence, betrayal and death. When it was initially formed in 1929, Boston consisted of an entirety of two Motleys. One of them formed of those Lost that had escaped in 1919, and deigned to stay in the city, while the other was composed of those Lost who escaped in 1929 and it seemed perfectly natural to everyone that they form a Motley. If Boston's Lost have learned one thing over the years its that Motleys formed entirely by the Hedge can go either way. Sometimes the shared bonds of escape and the struggle to reestablish life in Boston bonds the new Motley together, whereas other times the disparate personalities and clashing egos of the Lost involved tears the newborn Motley apart before it has a chance to get started.
Augustina's first motley lasted little more than a couple of months before her relationship with Howard Little tore the fledgling group apart, sending Howard off to the Brim, Blind Thomas away from Boston for a time, and everyone else bickering and bitter about the entire experience. Despite its ups and downs, which are many, the essential oath that binds the Motley together has endured since its humble beginnings in the Great Depression. Sometimes Augustina has a number of other Lost in her motley, other times the group splits apart amidst chaos and struggle. The last time that happened was 11 years ago, when a messed up love triangle split her motley in two and destroyed another.
Since that last scandal, the Motley has more or less stood strong. They fight and bicker now and again, but since the 40s, no member of Augustina's Motley has honestly forsaken it. Some have left it for a time, mind you. It's like a real family, good and bad parts alike. Tensions may rise and conflicts ensue, but ultimately, you're still there for one another at the end of the day. Augustina herself knows how much she owes to her friends and those who bond themselves to her. In her reckoning, it's exceedingly likely likely she'd have eaten a bullet by now without their love and support.
