The Wyld Reaches

The vast central area of the Hundred Kingdoms is dominated by the Ruins Of Madadhine, engulfed in the Wyld and lost to Creation. The ruins themselves are well within the Wyld, and the taint lingers for hundreds of miles around the ancient First Age city. One of the largest concentrations of Fair Folk in the region, with a few different Freeholds hidden away in the chaotic landscape, the destabilizing influence of the mad princes from beyond Creation has had an effect on the various states and kingdoms that border the Wyld.

Few central kingdoms have lasted for a terribly long time, and the region is always engaged in some kind of war. Some states such as the Kingdom of Budan Mar have engaged in near constant war for 60 years, while great cities like the Fortress City Of Mourning Spire? have seen seven independent ruling dynasties in the last 200 years. Civil wars and fragmenting alliances, such as when the Republic Of Dalton? broke off from the Mourning Spire only ten years ago, are also quite common. Other empires get their start like the City-State of Radiant?, conquered by a warlord six years ago.

Other nations manage to avoid the full force of the regions instability. Some, like the Principality Of Amanton, benefit from a horrifically tyrannical leader who keeps the other nearby states in check. Other lands benefit from strong patrons, like Jodun, God of Amersia, who has maintained order over three large cities and the central stretch of the Maruto River for 200 years. A few independent towns and small villages manage to slip under the radar of their neighbors, but few last more than 20-30 years before meeting some end. Others manage to avoid notice but suffer in other fashions, such as the village of Julias Rest?, nestled in a secluded valley and sheltered by the nearby Bordermarches of the Wyld but subject to the occasional mutation or attack by Hobgoblins.

The central region of the Hundred Kingdoms is largely composed of rolling hills, vast rolling plains of tall grasses, and is sparsely peppered with forests and a few ranges of low mountains. While quite rich in natural resources, most of the riches of the area go untapped due to the dangers and instability of the area. The growing season is long, but the Wyld tends to make the regions weather more unpredictable and harsh than other parts of the East. In particular, the area is known for its horrible storms.

A number of shadowlands dot the region, but the Circle Of Bones is the greatest of them. A vast graveyard of gray hills and dying plains, the ground saturated with bleached and aged bones. It's exact origin is unknown, but seems to date back before the Great Contagion, though it was likely much smaller.

Local Rumors

  • The small Kingdom of Budan Mar has broken apart, violently, within the last few weeks after only a year of peace following its last protracted war with one of its neighbors. This time the root of the conflict lies between the Lords of Budan and Mar, who had been growing more and more unhappy with the arrangement over the last decade, with diplomacy finally breaking down over rights to the Kingdom's rich deposits of Iron and Silver. A number of refugees have already fled south along the Maruto, fleeing the growing conflict.
  • The City of Amanton was gutted some three weeks back attempting to force one of the Unclean from its walls, where it had apparently started a small but insidious cult in its masters name. The battle destroyed a fair portion of the cities Slums, and cut its armies down considerably in size. Though they paid a fair price for it, they were able to force the Demon Sorcerer to flee into the wilderness.
  • The long and bitter war between the Mourning Spire and the Republic of Dalton has finally come to an end, after the general of the Spire's armies managed to return his troops home and overthrow the King. Hailed within the city by its people as Liberator, the General still had to endure a period of unrest while he hammered out a rough peace agreement with the now-independent Republic.
  • A disturbing number of encounters with what most fear are Deathknights have been reported throughout the region, seeming to center around the Circle of Bones. Many villages and outlying towns report being visited by a pale prophet speaking of dead gods, one army was scourged by a warrior in moaning plate, while everywhere the dead seem to be getting more restless. A few brave souls that have travelled to the Circle of Bones have reported seeing a strange Bone Castle in the very center...
