< Samsons Motley | Buncha Motleys | First Motley >
The Irregulars were founded in 1978 by John Toombs and Samhain, both members in good standing of the Summer Court who had distinguished themselves in the fight against Endless Winter and wanted to help protect the Freehold against future threats. Most of the groundwork for the Motley had already been laid by '75, with members of the Motley growing more and more comfortable working closely together. The Motleys' oath set up many of the basic tenets that shaped the Irregulars throughout their twenty year history, such as their egalitarian leadership and utter disrespect for the privacy of others in the Freehold. It quickly became apparent that the Irregulars were both quite radical and exceedingly good at ferreting out threats. This caused reaction to them to be exceedingly mixed.
The Motley underwent a sizable shift in 1985, when it nearly got into an all-out war with Blood Red over repeated snooping around in the gangs territory. During the height of this debacle, Thorvald Drake was found trespassing in the gangs territory and shot in the face by the gangs leader Anthony Redface. All out war between the Motleys, likely resulting in the Irregulars destruction, was only halted by timely and humble action at the hands of Samhain. While likely preserving the Motley, this action caused a schism and ultimately resulted in Kevin leaving the group and rejoining the mainstream Summer Court. This first disaster was swiftly followed by another when, a bit later in the year, Jillian Price simply disappeared and was never heard from again.
The Motley finally fell apart in 1999, following the disappearance of co-founder John Toombs -- who, it was revealed, was actually a closet Loyalist since his escape named Paul Ferland. The realization that their motley was founded by a loyalist, had sheltered one unknowingly for twenty years and had in fact been somewhat poisoned by his hatred and self-loathing -- among other things -- caused the Motley to shatter and self-destruct within weeks.
