the Crown of Alabaster

Level 5 Cluster of Throwing Knives

The Crown of Alabaster first appeared in the South thousands of years ago, during the very height of the Old Realm. A young Iron Wolf known as Hiran had acquired them during some minor endeavor, and been consumed by their power. Blasted outside of fate, rendered paranoid and consumed with hatred for the Sidereal, the Solar managed to kill over eleven of the Fivefold Brotherhood before he was finally hunted down and brought to heel by the Solar Deliberative. While Hiran eventually recovered from the influence of the Crown, much of the damage it had done to him was permanent and he was never able to tell anyone how he'd come into contact with the strange weapon. Nor were the Twilights and Sidereals who investated the origins of the Crown able to determine much else, except making an guess that the Night had claimed the knives as spoils of war following one of his assignments.

Much like all of the Dooms, the Crown proved difficult to contain. After only a century, it managed to work its way back into the hands of another Solar Exalted and bring about the slaughter of yet more Sidereals. After the Usurpation, moved by unseen providence and manipulation of fate into the hands of a berevaed Lunar, the Crown brought about yet more death until the Sidereals finally managed to bring a stop to the rampaging Chosen. Bound tightly with sorcery and astrology, the Sidereals sent the weapon off into the very utter reaches of the world, hiding it deep within the folds of fate in the hopes that it would be forgotten.

Most suspect that it waits out there even now, fraying at the bonds of their manipulation, seeking its freedom and the opportunity to hunt the Sidereal once again...

The Crown of Alabaster takes the form of twelve individual throwing knives, each made of an unidentified but highly magical material that looks somewhat like white steel but is far more resilient and lighter. The knives link together into a rough circlet, the blades pointing up and looking vaguely like a crown.

Other Powers of the Crown of Alabaster:

  • Creeping Insanity: The Crown of Alabaster possesses a deep and intrisic blight, which has a disturbing tendency to infect the attuned bearer of the knives. Every month of possession, the bearer must make a Willpower roll with a difficulty of 3. On a success, he avoids any ill effect that month, but on a failure he gains 1 point toward "purchasing" the following flaws (in order):
    • Superstition (2pt flaw). The character first gains the superstition that his every action is dictated by fate (a 1pt superstition), and then that the forces of fate are actively malevolent and uncaring (another 1pt superstition).
    • Derangement (3pt flaw). The character gains the Shattered Mind derangement, developing acute paranoia.
    • Vice (1-3pt flaw). The character gains one dot of the Vice flaw for each point, lowering his compassion by 2 with regard to the Sidereal Exalted until it reaches an effective value of 0. This manifests as a slowly building hate toward the Sidereal Exalted.
  • Doom of the Sidereal: The Crown of Alabaster is not known as the Doom of the Sidereal Exalted simply because it leads one to hate and fear these agents of fate. The blades are, in fact, especially potent weapons against the Chosen of the Maidens.

  • Outside of Fate: The bearer of the Crown of Alabaster is slowly removed from the rolls of heaven and eventually blasted entirely outside of Fate. This progression usually mirrors that of the characters growing insanity, but will occur regardless of rather or not the character can keep his mind.
    • The Rolls of Fate: The character is moved entirely outside the rolls of Fate. Heaven no longer has to plan his fate and has no capability to do so. The movements and destiny of the character is no longer seen in the Loom, and the character is immune to Sidereal Astrology. He also gains all the protections against Sidereal Charms that being Outside of Fate defers.
    • From The Outside: The character gains three points of the Lucky merit and the Unlucky flaw. Those affected by the Crown's power tend toward both terrible tragedy and amazing bouts of luck. Prolonged users of the Crown also generally recieve the Dark Fate flaw, often at high levels. Anyone who investigates these changes to his destiny discovers traces that look remarkably similar to Sidereal Astrology.

The Crown of Alabaster is made of an unknown material, and its properties are ill-understood. One can attempt to fully attune to it with a Wits+Lore roll at difficulty 7, with a success doubling the attunement cost of the item. When so attuned, the thrown stats of the weapon increase by +1 and the weapons return to their linked cirlet as a free reflexive action instead of a simple one.
