Back to Lunar Charms or No Moon Caste

Basic Lunar Battlefield Tactics charms

The Lunar Exalted were originally Exalted in the service of War, and served in the First Age as officers and generals in the armies of the Old Realm. Many of these charms are the remnants of the magic that once belonged to the Half Moon Caste. Most "Half Moons" in the Second Age are Changing Moon Lunars that have chosen Perception and Wits as their favored abilities, which roughly simulates the favored attributes of the old caste.

Most of these charms are of an intermediate scale. Sidereals deal with the big picture, while in contrast Lunars tended to lead from the lines. Solars, I imagine, are more flexible. Their warfare charms likely had overall strategy and smaller scale tactical charms as well.

Flexible War-Gods Mind

  Cost: 1 mote per die
  Duration: One scene
  Type: Simple
  Minimum Wits: 2
  Minimum Essence: 1
  Prerequisite Charms: None

The Lunar warlord uses essence to quicken and enhance the workings of his mind, allowing him to react more easily to changing conditions on the battlefield and constantly be one step ahead of his opponents. The character gains one extra dot of Wits for every mote spent using this charm, though he cannot more than double his basic pool. This boost improves the Lunars initiative rating, and all Wits-based rolls that he makes which have to do with strategy, tactics, or warfare, or combat. He also gains this bonus in other situations that require rapid reactions and the ability to quickly assess complex situatiosn. A Lunar using this charm seems particularly serene and composed in even the most chaotic of situations.

Warlords All-Seeing Eye

  Cost: 1 mote
  Duration: Instant
  Type: Reflexive
  Minimum Perception: 3
  Minimum Essence: 1
  Prerequisite Charms: Flexible War-Gods Mind

A Lunar warlord seldom fights or leads from the rear, but instead finds himself right in the thick of combat, engaging his enemy at the front of his own men. There are, of course, certain advantages to a more detached style of leadership - one of them being awareness of the overall course of battle. A Lunar with this charm sacrifices little for his more hands-on approach, however, and may use this charm at any point to notice any developments on the field of battle that he might not otherwise see. If a roll is necessary, the difficulty is reduced to 1 and the Lunar converts dice equal to his Perception into automatic successes and may roll the rest of his pool as normal. This charm does not assist the Lunar in noting things that are unconnected to the overall battle or combat.

Reforming the Line Method

  Cost: 5 motes
  Duration: One turn
  Type: Simple
  Minimum Wits: 4
  Minimum Essence: 2
  Prerequisite Charms: Warlords All-Seeing Eye

Often times developments in battle can change the situation significantly, and the Lunars forces have to adjust and adapt to the new conditions on the battlefield. A Lunar can use this charm to take a few seconds to adapt his plans to these new conditions, and implement these plans flawlessly. The Lunar makes a Charisma + Presence roll, with a number of bonus dice equal to his Wits. The difficulty varies with how strong the Lunars lines of command are, while the number of successes rolled determines how well the Lunar dealt with the problem. One success will ensure that reinforcements are where they're most needed, three successes will reform scattered lines after a devestating cavalry charge or surprise flank manuever, while five successes can keep the Lunars forces fighting at full capacity even after diasterous calamities such as the unleashing of powerful First Age weapons.

This charm doesn't allow the Lunars forces to automatically defeat any force they are put against, but it does the character to ensure that his forces are used to their utmost efficiency and can overcome disadvantages in training or superior equipment to some degree.

Widening the Hole Method

  Cost: 6 motes, 1 willpower
  Duration: One turn
  Type: Simple
  Minimum Wits: 4
  Minimum Essence: 3
Prerequisite Charms: Holding the Line Method

Sometimes a momentary advantage, if pushed quickly and efficiently enough, can be a quick way to turn the tides of battle and bring about victory. Yet sometimes ones forces are not in position to adequately take advantage of these opportunities, and they are lost in the tumult of battle to no further effect. A Lunar with this charm, sensing such an opportunity, can use this charm to spend a few seconds adapting his plan and implenting a particularly devestating attack on his opponent. The Lunar makes a Charisma + Presence roll, with a number of bonus dice added equal to the his Wits. The difficulty varies with how much of an opening the Lunar has to work with, while the number of successes determines how impressive an impact the Lunars manuever has on the overall battle. One success means that the Lunars manuever is particularly more damaging than it would have been otherwise, while three successes truly mauls the opponents and does a fair amount of damage to his forces, and five successes both inflicts heavy damage and opens another hole in the opponents defenses that can be utilized next turn.

This charm makes the characters forces particularly adapt at taking advantage of momentary disadvantages in his enemies lines, and is damned effective at what it does. However, unless the character gets a lot of five success rolls one after the other, it generally won't actually turn the tide of a battle on its own. The difficulty of the roll is typically fairly high, only lowering to one or two if the opponent has suffered calamities such as being smote by First Age weapons or otherwise is already devestated.
