This craggy, brown and orange mountain range is dotted with scrub-like vegetation from its foot to its peak, which is only really moderately high. The Mekillot Mountains sprawl out, more than climb up, having more folds than peaks by far. It also boasts a known subterranean aquifer, which is what results in the relatively thick plant life (when taken by contrast with the nearby barrens of the Ivory Plains).
These mountain ranges are famous most particularly for their namesake: gargantuan beasts of burden called mekillots. They are born here, and they inevitably shamble off stubbornly to return here, when they feel they are approaching death. This has resulted in a massive mekillot graveyard which covers nearly the entire eastern face of the range. Many travelers have arrived here
The Tyrian merchant houses of Fyra and Harbeth, both in the fields of mekillot "domestication" and trafficking, have established fair-sized fortresses amid the mountain peaks. Though the two forts are somewhat competitive as regards one another, they are ultimately devoted to the beasts. In something like a peace-time treaty, the merchant families unite their forces to protect and patrol the range. Together, they ward off raiders or encroaching predators who may have come to claim some of the herd.
At the northern peak of the Mekillot Mountains is a small Nibenese complex listed on the map as one "Outpost 19". This is the only mention in any record of the silk-farm there, where the ancient house Folmorne houses the main bulk of its silk-manufacture. Very few venture to Outpost 19, for it is one of the largest known slave camps in the Nibenese holdings. Here, silk is harvested, cured, spun, and made into bolts by the ton from a disgusting worm-like creature that has established a deep and gruesome cavern system in the damp underbelly of the Mekillot Mountains.
