The game is mostly centered, at least to start, on the part of the Galaxy closest to Earth. Back in the time of the Old Empires, this area of space was a busy crossroads of four of the great Galactic Empires: the Empire Of Man, the Pantropic Collective, the Pan Orion Alliance, and CORE. After the war (which started to peter out 300 years ago, and finally stopped about 100 years ago), things have slowly started to settle down, and already new Kingdoms are starting to form.
