Detroit By Night

Millender Center

Civic Center

This collection of public buildings on Hart Plaza are host to concerts, sporting events like the
Detroit Pistons and Red Wings games, and events like the Detroit Auto Show. When in use, security
is tight and kindred are generally encouraged to stay away. When not in use, the buildings offer
little in the way of privacy (security guards are still present) and nothing of interest to observe.

The Ford Auditorium was the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra until 1989, when
funding was finally raised to relocate to a venue with better acoustics, although Prince Ryecroft
probably liked holding events within a short walk or People Mover ride from the Ren Cen.

Cobo Hall is Detroit’s convention center. Its cafeteria and ballroom offer sweeping views of the
river, and easy access to the People Mover via the station here.

Joe Louis Arena seats 20,000 people and is perhaps best known as the place where Ronald Reagan
was nominated at the Republican National Convention here in 1979.
