Guardian Building
This ornate 1929 skyscraper is a flamboyant banking tribute to the roaring 1920s. The notched
Aztec front façade is made of specially-crafted bricks that cover the 535-foot high building,
decorated with bands of colored tiles. In front of the main lobby and adjacent banking room over
the main entrance is a Pewabic-tiled half dome. The walls of the main lobby are blood-red
Nubian marble. World-famous artist Ezra Winter designed the lobby’s mosaic mural. The ceiling
was hand-painted in ornate patterns on massive canvases stretched over a thick mat of horsehair
to muffle the sound in the vast room. The Guardian Building was built as the headquarters of the
Toreador-controlled Guardian National Bank, but presently serves as the headquarters of
Michigan Consolidated Gas.
The building’s spectacular lobby and meeting halls were frequently used to host kindred gatherings.
Several justicars formally met with the prince here over the years. After the construction of the
Renaissance Center in 1977, the Guardian building was seldom used by kindred until Jarvis Burleigh
assumed the Prince’s seat in 1990.
