Detroit By Night
Most Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Cathedral
Motown Museum
Pop music legends, scores of them, were made here in these modest studios converted from
two-story family homes. Motown Records broke down rock and roll color lines and launched an
amazing number of stars whose music is remembered tonight. Records produced in the small
studio were among the first recordings by black artists to break into the mainstream charts. Within
a few years of its founding in 1959, Motown had become the largest black-owned company in
America with a huge office on Woodward Avenue just north of the Fisher Freeway.
In 1971 Detroit’s economy had soured to the point where it could no longer attract top musicians,
so Motown Records moved to Los Angeles where it was unable to compete against the larger
music companies and was acquired in 1988 by MCA.
The city bought the old studio buildings and made them into a museum showcasing Detroit’s
golden era of music. A society of the museum’s patrons and Motown fans still meets here periodically.
