Renaissance Center
Huge and controversial, the Ren Cen includes the world’s tallest hotel (73 stories high), over
2 million square feet of office space, and dozens of shops and restaurants in its ground floor
shopping mall. It is built on the site of an old warehouse complex (once claimed by former
Detroit Prince Archimedes) and rests right next to the tunnel to Canada. Completed in 1977,
it instantly became the symbol of Detroit. Surrounded by a concrete wall, its four corner
office towers and massive central tower are covered in dark glass and dominate the skyline.
The impression is one of a modernized medieval fortress on the riverfront, guarding the
passage across and gazing down on the city below.
During Prince Ryecroft’s reign, a private elevator brought selected visitors from the parking
garage or the lobby up to a circular V.I.P. ballroom above the revolving Summit Steakhouse
restaurant. Court is no longer held here due to disturbing events, but once in a while a meeting
will still be held here.
There was also a long spiral staircase leading to a deep subterranean chamber where
some kindred lay in torpor. The underground rooms were used by the Sabbat to sneak into the
Prince’s court ballroom during an attack in 1990.
