Detroit By Night

Downtown: the View from the Castle
From the revolving restaurant atop the world’s tallest hotel, downtown Detroit sparkles and
casts a glowing reflection of itself in the wide band of the Detroit river flowing past the other
side of the Renaissance Center. Edmund Ryecroft, the Prince of Detroit from 1967 to 1990
would hold his court here, where the panorama of his city would parade around him and his
guests. The hidden backer of many of downtown’s revitalization projects, Ryecroft evidently
wanted to reshape Detroit into a modern version of his old home in Flanders, France, complete
with a castle to demonstrate his authority.
