Southwest Expanse
Southwest Detroit has four main draws. On Michigan Avenue there is the endangered Tiger Stadium,
one of the few remaining grand old ball parks with real mystique. Nearby, Mexican Town has a
concentration of popular Mexican restaurants. At the foot of Clark Street near the Ambassador Bridge
to Canada is the dock for the rusting excursion boats to the now closed Boblo Island amusement park.
A little farther to the west on the river sits historic Fort Wayne, one of the last generation of star-shaped
stone fortresses. The adjacent air base was the staging point for the famous Tuskegee Airmen during
World War II.
Surrounding these sites are neighborhoods of much older housing once occupied by the workers of the
area’s big employers. Tonight many of these houses are vacant near the Detroit city limits, but
the general population density rises as one moves further to the west.
