Detroit By Night
The Grosse Pointes
Detroit Auto Factories
By 1900, automobile manufacturers were beginning to spring up all over the U.S. Due to the
audacious drive of several key people living here, Detroit auto companies wiped out most of the
competition with their cheap, mass production of vehicles.
Tonight the city of Detroit manufactures just a tiny fraction of the country’s autos. Only two assembly
plants are currently in operation, but there was a time when Detroit’s factories were making most of
the automotives in the world. Dozens of these massive complexes were built here, only to close
down a few decades later. Most are too large and solidly built to be easily or cheaply torn down.
If you take a drive around the city, you will see the ghost-like remains of the many factories which
launched many of America’s legendary cars. These great dark bulks in the night sky provide environs for
homeless, addicts, criminals, and the occasional reclusive vampire. While they can offer great privacy
at night, these Barrens are by no means a safe resting place during the day from snooping mortals.
