The Grosse Pointes
The various communities bearing variations on the name “Grosse Pointe” represent some of the
remaining middle class suburbs adjacent to Detroit city proper. A line of luxury apartments beginning
at the Detroit city limits on Jefferson avenue gradually turn into modest Tudor homes to the north and
east. The area is known for being the traditional home for people who work with their hands: skilled
tradesmen, tool and die workers, construction workers and the remaining assembly line workers. These
neighborhoods are separate from the Detroit city government and have fiercely resisted any attempts
by their larger neighbor to annex or control them. Probably as a result of the region’s independence,
the riverfront here sports apartment and townhouse enclaves with marinas, swimming pools, tennis
courts, and semi-private shopping malls.
